St. Croix
I'm back.
I was actually back on wednesday night, but I took the Thursday off just to complete the week long vacation and to ruminate on the vacation itself. I am now ready to web log.
The trip was AMAZING! St. Croix was definitely the perfect "getaway" spot that Amy and I were looking for for our 2 year anniversary. One of the things I realized was that I never really knew what a real beach was until this trip (sorry to you Cali people that think you have the best beaches). The sands were white and soft, and the water was see-your-toes-in-3-feet-of-water clear and warm. Add in a pinch of perfect weather, a dash of delightful plantlife and wildlife, and we had ourselves the perfect beach.
A quick recap is in order...
...we stayed in a semi small resort (Chenay Bay Beach Resort) where everyone gets their own cottage fully equipped with a kitchen, so we often cooked breakfast bought from a charming local supermarket and ramin (from home). Pronounced "croy", St. croix is very laid back and "underdeveloped" as a tourist spot so a lot of things were kind of "do it yourself'. We tried hiking and of course we went to many different beaches. But the trip was topped off by a side trip to an adjacent island called Buck Island where the coral reef snorkelling trail is amazing. 50 bucks bought us a sailboat ride, snorkelling equippment, a guide, and finding nemo at our fingertips. On the ride there, we were joined by 20 other people on the boat. When one woman had her doubts about snorkelling, the man from Boston tipped the scales by saying, "Ever see that movie The Little Mermaid? They dont' make that shit up!!" I couldn't have described the experience better myself. After the snorkelling, we went to the island's beach which was absolutely breathtaking. We also saw baby blacktip sharks swimming close to shore...oh so cool.
It was definitely not the conventional resort/party vacation by any means. We had a car, a map, and our sense of direction to get us around island. A short chitchat with locals led us to great little local burger joints, markets, and shopping which kept us busy when we weren't on the beach. There weren't that many party spots (3 max by our hotel), so when the sun set, Amy and I were left to our own devices, often watching movies on HBO in our cottage or out on a driving ecursion to explore the island's "nightlife".
And that's pretty much it. Great this vacation was, short this summary wasn't. If you want great beaches, a place to chill, relax, and don't mind some exploring and adventure, definitely check out St. Croix.
Happy 2 Years...WOW =)
