Return of the Alumni
March 24th, 2005 marked the 5th anniversary of Dance Mix. Beingly only two years out of school and still knowing people on campus, it also marked probably the last time I would be able to visit campus.
So we made the trip. The New Yorkers (Dann, Megan, and I) bought tickets together and sat next to each other on the plane while Suj sat first class (because he is of the highest social order in India haha jk...but I'm actually not). When we got to DTW, we were picked up by Tracee and the reunion had begun. From Boston came Steve, from Chicago came Ant, from Cali came JB, and Amy Kuo followed from New York on Friday.
It was definitely a different vibe from last year's Dance Mix when I went back to Ann Arbor for the first time as an alum. Back then I still felt like a student even though I wasn't. It was awkward. But this time, two years out, I went back as an alum and felt like one. I didn't expect to know anyone on campus and relied on my fellow alums to hangout. It was freakin' great.
We ate at most of the classic AA spots and experienced some of the newer places too. I'm sure it's like this at every college campus, but FOOD on campus is the BEST. No matter where you eat after you graduate, nothing will ever compare to the local spots on campus. Charley's, Chinagate, Red Robin, Sushi, Pancheros, Red Robin, Pizza House....mmmm mmmm good.
Then there was the show- Dance Mix 2005. funKtion and Encore were amazing. All the worrying about how these two groups would fair after we all graduated were totally put to rest. Would they phase out? Crumble? Die? After watching the show, it's safe to say that not only are thsee groups still around, but they're better than when we were there!
It was just great being back on campus with all my college friends. Especially now that we're all over the country, to be back in Ann Arbor felt as close to reliving college as we could get.
But alas, college is over and had to return to the real world of network issues, printer jams, and email delays.
Be cool...stay in school.
