Manic Wednesday

My eyes opened and it was 7am. I had to catch a bus at 7:15. That bus gets me on the 7:40 train (7:35 if I'm lucky) out of Flushing and to my desk in the city at exactly 830 am, the time I'm scheduled to start my day. There is no room for error. I jumped up, brushed my teeth, ironed my clothes, put on my clothes, and it was 7:20. I missed my bus. My backup plan was my Dad who works nights and would be coming home at around 7:25. 7:30 rolls around and there's no Dad. I give him a ring to find that he's heading over to my brother's place for the day. There went plan B. At this point there is no way I'm getting into the office on time if I catch the next bus. My last resort is driving into the city and blow $20 on parking. I decided to be really late. I walk out of my house and the light bulb in my head lights up. I realized that I could drive to Shea Stadium (the first stop out of Flushing) and park for the day for only $3. Great idea! I hop in my car, Garden State sountrack playing in the background, and get to Shea Stadium, park my car, and enter the station by 7:39. I'm ahead of the game. I walk up the stairs to the express 7 train platform and a train pulls right up. I couldn't have timed it better. I get on the train and I'm on my way to work.

I'm in Flushing again. No, it's not the end of the day after work, it's 5 minutes later! Let me explain...Once I stepped onto the train, I got the perfect seat (the one next do the doors). As I'm sitting, I notice that the train is pretty empty. I didn't give it much thought- I had a nice seat and was ready to nap all the way to work. The next thing I know, everything around me was getting darker. I opened my eyes and the train was heading underground! Now if you don't know the 7 train, it's mostly an elevated train ("el") except when leaving Queens and into Manhatten, or when entering Flushing. So when I opened my eyes to see why it was getting darker, I realized that I had gone the WRONG WAY on the 7 train!! Instead of going on the Manhatten bound train, somehow I ended up on the Flushing bound train, completely backtracking and wasting all the driving and effort to get into work on time!! No wonder the train was empty and no wonder I actually got a door seat!

Sitting there on the train as it slowly headed into Flushing, I had a horrible feeling in my gut. It was as if the wind got knocked out of me. I was completely helpless and out of options. There was nothing else I could do but accept my fate. I was stuck on the Flushing bound train and I was going to be late...and I was.
