So today turned out pretty eventful, just like i had hoped. At around 3 o'clock, i got a call from an OLD OLD friend of mine from my neighborhood to go play ball. His name is MIKE. Here's a little background.....me and mike basically grew up together here in good old College Point, Queens. We used to ride bikes, play basketball, stickball, and handball everyday during our summer vacations. Because he always went to catholic schools, i only hung with him during the summer.
Now Mike is definitely a character. Picture this- a 6 foot 2 inch white kid, lanky build, with blonde crewcut hair that wears thick flannel during the winter and "monster truck" t-shirts in the summer. Kinda like a character from the "King of the Hill" cartoon, right? But his looks aren't what make this kid unique. Some of his interests include big muscle cars like mustangs, dodge chargers, baracudas and the like.....his favorite TV show is Dukes of Hazzard and of course his dream car is the 1969 Dodge Charger complete with the Confederate Flag on the doors....And his favorite radio station is 101.1- good old oldies EXcluding todays' best music haha. It's like there was this forcefield around Mike's house that kept everything slightly modern from entering. Whenver i hangout with him it's like i'm thrown back to the 1960s. For example...today we went to play ball with his friend Daragh Quinn, Daraghs's dad, Daragh's little brother John, and Mike Ferrari. Aside from John (12yrs old), i was the only person there under 6'2" and 190 lbs. While we were driving down to Chelsea Piers to play ball, Daragh's dad had 101.1 on the radio...they all have the same interests when it comes to music. So i was sitting in the car while these oldies were blasting on the radio. Much respect to al lthe old school artists...but you have to admit, it's kinda weird. Then all of a sudden Daragh challenges Mike in a game of "Name that band" where Mike would say the name of an oldie song and Daragh would have to say the band's name......sorta challenging each other's love for the oldies. While they were debating whether "The Animals" or "Four Tops" sang the song that was playing on the radio....i was just sitting there laughing at the whole situation. Then Daragh's dad chimes in...."Mike, ya dunno whatcha tawkin aboot" with a crazy thick Irish accent. Funny right? Well...i thoguht so. =)
Although many of our interests don't coincide with each other, we both love the game of basketball. There were times when we'd wake up at 10 every morning during the summer (now i can't even wake up before 12) and play ball at our local courts. We'd shoot around for hours, waiting for other people to show up to get a pick up game going. Basketball plus all those times we "played outside" together made us really close friends....and we still are.
Now that he's a Marine that's stationed out in Hawaii (how lucky is that?), i don't get to see him that much. It was nice playin ball with him again after 3 whole years. I love that kid....
